Myself and a group of college chums hit the C & O Canal on Sunday, riding from Point of Rocks to Harpers Ferry and back.
What’s the trick for biking in 40 degree weather? Good gloves, hat and just enough layers that you are cold when you start but naturally warm up after about 10 minutes from the physical work.
It was 13 miles up and 13 back, and was mostly a flat ride with slight incline and decline. After we reached Harpers Ferry, we shouldered our bikes and walked them across the bridge to downtown.
The ride back was much easier, but my strong-riding friends would have none of that. They pushed the pedals and we sped down the trail, which made my legs burn and lungs fill deep with oxygen. This second half became a sunny work out.
After returning to the Point of Rocks parking lot, we headed over to Brunswick and grabbed lunch at Boxcar Burgers, where we ordered and ate sitting on a wall across the street. There was no dining room or nearby bathroom thanks to Covid, so prepare accordingly. My Impossible burger was a satisfying end to the morning adventure.
